We all know Darren Aronofsky knows how to create a chilling psychological thriller, and 2010’s Black Swan is no exception. First discussed as far back as 2000, the film finally went into production in 2009 and released in late 2010 to critical acclaim and box-office success, despite its limited release. When awards season came around, it was nominated for 5 Academy Awards and won for Natalie Portman’s highly memorable leading performance.
Of course, no psychological thriller is complete without equally thrilling sound design. Black Swan is filled with haunting drones and shimmering artifacts to create a sense of eeriness that needed to be sustained throughout. And the top-notch film editing wouldn’t have made half the impact without working in tandem with the incredible sound.
