It hardly seems like 15 years ago that we were halfway through the Harry Potter film series. But time flies—unless, of course, you have a Time-Turner—and today is The Goblet of Fire’s birthday!
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was the fourth installment of the film series and one of the most critically successful, mainly for its darker, more sophisticated approach which warranted the series’ first PG-13 rating. The movie came with its fair share of challenges; for instance, the book is one of the longest in the series and twice as long as any other Harry Potter book before it, and iconic composer John Williams was unable to return to score the film adaptation. While The Goblet of Fire’s music is still great, the absence of Williams may have pushed the sound team to up their game even more. In this scene, we can hear all their hard work as the sound design bed builds up to the powerful and dramatic collision of Harry and Voldemort’s spells—the sound of which was created by crumbling rocks, icebergs, fire whooshes, and thunder.
